MATHEMATICS AS A WAY TO BUILD QUALIFIED CHARACTERS

Indonesia is a country that has many natural resources but it also has many problems in this country. In this country, there are some serious problems which need problem solving. For example: corruption problems, education problems, moral degradation, jobless, poverty and also low human resources. Some problems in Indonesia are not simple problems but they can influence Indonesian human society characters that today become decrease. The decrease of characters has also affected intellectual community, in these case university students. We often know much fraudulence that is did by university students. For example is plagiarism. When the university students are given some tasks by their lecturer, they often copy paste from internet easily. It indicates character degradation in human resources. The nature of university student is nation generation should be honest, creative, and innovative.
From the actions of plagiarize other people's work then directly shows that university students are not honest. This deception will indirectly kill their creativity. When they are copying or plagiarizing the other people’s work, their mind are not running and growing. If it continues, it will make dependence until they actually lose their creativity. Students who simply copying and pasting from the internet will hamper the development of student creativity....


It shows a contradiction to the demands of critical elite students. As critical students, they will be able to produce creative and innovative work for the progress of the nation. But what we see now, plagiarism has been the habit of students. Students are more capable in cheating by plagiarize other people’s work. Besides that, there was still a student who did plagiarism for the final assignment.
It is an example of character degradation in around us. Besides that, there are still many cases that show the moral degradation of the Indonesian nation. It has become a concern for the Indonesian nation, therefore the government announced to incorporated character education into the curriculum of Indonesian education in all subjects. It aims to form student’s behavior into a good direction. With teach at an early stage is expected to form their characters, so will not happen deceptions and plagiarize of people’s work. It is inevitable that cheating and plagiarism are not just necessarily occurring suddenly. However, we can investigate from people’s history. To form the character of our students cannot just start when they have become students. Therefore, as has been said before, character education should start early. Characters will be able to develop attitudes that lead to the truth.
The addition of character education programs into the education curriculum is considered additional burden for teachers and students. In addition, teacher must teach lesson for graduation their students, a teacher is also required to inculcate character based on curriculum. Therefore, curriculum does not impact on the students directly. In fact, this program has been implemented implicitly in teaching and learning. If it formulate in curriculum, it is reputed as an additional burden. Without inserted into the educational curriculum, character education actually is already implicit in the learning process as mentioned before.
No exception in mathematics subject. In mathematics, character education has implied much good character that can be taken. Mathematics is an exact science in which the solution must be the same among the people with each other. As if the 3 x 3, in mathematics all the people will answer 9. When looking for reasons we will find that this is an agreement. Like the truth, a truth that is relative to but we have a measure of truth in accordance with the collective agreement. If this measurement is avoided then it is wrong. So is mathematics, if the rules are avoided, we will be reputed that we are wrong. For that matter, besides doing exercise in math, we also have learned to obey the existing rules.
Commonly, mathematical problems are about our daily life. That is formed in story problems. Both a math problem that formed as a story problem and multiple choice problems require step to solve the problems and cannot be directly we guess. From solving math problems that require many steps, students will be educated to think rationally, logically to solve a problem in their daily life. However, students sometimes do not realize that the steps are did required rational and logical thinking. If it is educated to students, students would be encouraged to utilize the rational and logical thinking to solve problems. From each of the steps are required to solve mathematics problems, the students are required don’t give up and be careful, because if the students are careless and wrong, they had to repeat again the steps. This can be educated directly to students about the unyielding character and thorough.
Furthermore, in prove a theorem in mathematics we often use mathematical induction. We often do not realize that there is another meaning of this process, not just only prove theorem but also teaches about the formation of character. When we prove a theorem, we learn do not petty or narrow thinking. This happens because when we prove, we should not just use one example that properly. However, in general we must show that theorems valid in universal. Because if only one example, is not necessarily true for all variable. In this process we also required to consider other possibilities. We can apply it in our lives. When we envisage a problem we must also consider other aspects. In a problem we must able to see things in the two sides. Not positive or negative side only. So in real life, people will not look at something with narrow mind. In other words, through this method, we would be prudent.
We also know algebra in mathematics. Any progress we will see algebraic variety of problems were not all questions can be done in one way or the same step but we must be creative manipulate it. This manipulation has purpose to find the right solution not to override existing rules. There are many roads to Rome. As we face the problem we will search the right step. Try from one step to the next step. In other words we will be moved to look for the best step. Through this process we have honed our creativity.
From the description that has been outlined above we can say that by studying mathematics at the same time we have learned to form our character. By studying mathematics, basically, we are also trained to be honest, patient, thorough and persistent. In addition we are also trained to be creative, thoughtful and persistent. Or in other words we also form our character indirectly. So, character education has been included in teaching lesson and it doesn’t need to be included in the curriculum. But, to realize in our daily life need confirmation in the inculcation of character value. Form of affirmation through reflection of every problem in mathematics and the mathematical steps. With this reflection the teachers not only teach the material obtained revealed as we often see but also the moral value that we can take. The hope in this way, the degradation of character can be minimized without the epidemic burden to parties related to education.
